Information for new athletes
Competition commences at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen on Saturday, Saturday 16 September 2017. The program starts at 7.30am for 1500m events, walks and javelin. All other events commence at 8.00am. Please note, only U12 – U17 eligible for Javelin.
The first day of competition can be quite chaotic and confusing for new athletes. There will be approximately 800 – 900 children all converging at the track, so it’s best to know beforehand where you need to be.
For the first two weeks of the season, all children will assemble in front of the grandstand in their age groups. Here they will meet their Age Manager who will then take them through their events for the morning. From week three onwards, athletes are expected to meet their age group at their first event. The weekly program will be on display at a table inside the main gate and their first for the day will be highlighted.
Athletics is a summer sport and it can get quite hot out in the middle of the field. Please remember to provide your child with plenty of water, a snack and a hat. Don’t forget to cover them in plenty of sunscreen as well.
On Saturday the children are required to wear their full Wakehurst uniform. This includes their athlete number, to be attached to the front of their singlet or crop top, and their age patch which must be attached to the left hand leg of their shorts or briefs. An athlete cannot compete without these numbers.
For safety reasons, parents are not allowed to accompany their children on to the track unless they are signed in as a parent helper. You may, of course, follow them around to their activities on the perimeter of the fence or up to the Shot Put and Discus nets. Parent helpers who are rostered on for a duty will be required to sign-in at the track and receive a “Parent Helper” bib to wear while on the field.
Training for Wakehurst athletes is held at Lionel Watts Oval, Frenchs Forest on Wednesday evenings commencing 14 September 2016 and runs throughout the season with a short break over Christmas. Children in the Unders 7s and Under 8s train from 5pm-6pm and all other athletes train from 6pm-7.30pm. Children are not required to wear their uniforms for training.
When athletes arrive they will join in a group warm-up session and will be then be split into their age groups.
Parent helpers are asked to be on time and have their name checked off on arrival. You will then be allocated an activity to assist with.
